Meet Hale

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am a first generation American whose parents immigrated from Turkey. Born and raised in New York (Long Island specifically), I grew up with my parents constantly reminding us of the quote "Shoot for the Moon, even if you miss you'll land among the stars." I am the first attorney in my extended family. I practiced law for 4 years in New York doing political law (an area where being young and a woman was an anomaly). I've been back in Boston for 3 and a half years - working at a national law firm, volunteering with The Junior League of Boston, helping the Massachusetts Bar Association run the state's mock trial program for students and being politically involved in my community. When I can get some "me" time, you can find me in spin class, at my best friend's house playing games with her four amazing kids, learning French, taking an obscene amount of photos everywhere I go, or spending quality time with my boyfriend and his dog (who he rescued!).

List six positive aspects about yourself.

Determined
Loyal
Supportive
Passionate
Has crazy curls (that are seldom curly)
The social organizer of the group

Please share a story with us that relates in any way to this movement.

Even though I am in my thirties, I often still see myself as the frizzy haired awkward 12 year old that was consistently made fun of. My hair was different, my clothes weren't totally in style and weren't designer as my family didn't have much money to spend on clothes and I was much more of a nerd than a popular girl. I think "bullied" would be too strong to describe those years where I tried to fit in only to have cruel jokes consistently played on me. I think part of that feeling like I didn't belong and that I was different has fueled my ambition and my determination. While I still carry part of that with me (and often have nightmares of being back in those school halls), I gain strength knowing how far I've come and how successful I've become - when those cruel children thought I was nothing more than someone to tease. But even in moments of total confidence, I can still look in the mirror and see a scared teenage with low self-esteem who longs to be like everyone else. It is in moment like those that I remind myself of the inner awesome that I had even as a 12 year old and that no child should ever try and take away that inner awesome from another.

Why do you want to be a part of she.?

I want to be a part of she. because I want to be one of those women who inspires and empowers, not someone who tries to keep someone down.
